How to Set Up a Guitar Nut for the Best Playing Action
Setting up a guitar nut correctly is one of the most critical steps in achieving low, comfortable playing action. Proper slot depth eliminates first-fret hand fatigue, ensures open chords stay in tune, and prevents unwanted string buzz.
1. Essential Tools Needed
Before making any adjustments to your guitar nut, ensure you have the proper tools on hand:
- Feeler Gauges / Precision Ruler: For measuring precise clearances at the 1st fret.
- Nut Slotting Files: Properly sized to match your specific string gauge set (avoid standard needle files, as they cut incorrect V-shaped grooves).
- Mechanical Pencil: For drawing a safety baseline.
- Nut Lubricant / Graphite: To eliminate string binding and tuning friction.
- Fine Sandpaper (400–800 grit): For profiling and smoothing the nut top.
2. Step-by-Step Nut Setup Guide
Step 1: Check and Adjust Neck Relief First
Never adjust nut slot height on a bowed neck. Tune your instrument to pitch, then depress the Low E string at the 1st fret and at the fret where the neck joins the body (typically the 14th fret).
Check clearance at the 7th fret—aim for roughly a 0.010" (0.25 mm) gap (the thickness of a thin business card). Adjust the truss rod first if the neck has excessive bow or backbow.
Step 2: Measure Current First-Fret Action
With the guitar in playing position (vertical, not lying flat on a bench):
- Fret each individual string down hard at the 3rd fret.
- Observe the hairline gap between the bottom of the string and the top of the 1st fret wire.
- Target Gap: You want a tiny sliver of light—approximately 0.005 to 0.010 in (0.12 to 0.25 mm). If the string touches the 1st fret, the slot is already too deep.
Step 3: Mark Your Safety Depth Limit

Step 5: Profile and Lubricate
Wound strings (Low E, A, D) should not sit buried in deep channels; roughly half the string diameter should sit above the top surface of the nut. Sand the top of the nut down if necessary.
